myron mixon and Ray Lampe both have cooking schools/ classes. Can anyone give a newbie some tips on these? What to expect, pros and con's etc. My brother and I are going to try competing this year, we do pretty good ribs and chicken, but the rest needs some work.

I never went to one of their cooking classes. One of my friends went to a class given by Paul Kirk. He said it was well worth the money. Sadly to say he hasn't got a call in any of the 4 contests he entered. However, he is making a good chunk of side money "Q"ing.

I'd suggest signing up for a judges class. There is one in Westmont on the 13th of this month. Go to the KCBS web site for details on who to contact.

After you become a judge, judge a comp. It will give you an idea of what judges want and how people make their turn in box. My wife and I feel it helped us in preparation and presentation. We did 2 contest and got 2 calls. It helps.

I have been talking with Ray Lampe (Dr BBQ) about doing a class down here. His next available time is in early 2008, and we are proceeding along that line. If anyone would be interested in a followup as things develop, drop me an email and I will keep you up.

What is the Zend Optimizer?

The Zend Optimizer is one of the most popular PHP plugins for performance-improvement, and has been available without charge, since the early days of PHP 4. It improves performance by scanning PHP's intermediate code and passing it through multiple Optimization Passes to replace inefficient code patterns with more efficient code blocks. The replaced code blocks perform exactly the same operations as the original code, only faster.

In addition to improving performance, the Zend Optimizer also enables PHP to transparently load files encoded by the Zend Guard.

The Zend Optimizer is a free product available for download from Zend Technologies. Zend Technologies also developed the PHP scripting engine, known as the Zend Engine.
