What are the best spices to use in rubs, I am putting a rub together and my family says that it needs something else?

The basics, I believe, to a good rub are brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. From there you can start to get pretty creative adding such things as cayenne pepper, chili powder, cumin, Old Bay, ground mustard, coriander and even Chinese five spices to give it a different flair. Just mix and match until you find the flavor you like.
