The Shattered Lantern
Darkness.
Emma Delauro slowly opened her eyes, blinking back a couple of times so she could adjust to the haunting darkness that enveloped her. Feeling for her head, she slowly massaged her temples in an attempt to lessen the pain she was feeling. She could vaguely remember what happened in the last hour or so, and that didn’t help her in the situation she was in.
She didn’t know where she was.
“Adam?” she called, lifting her hand to her lips, only to realize that her commlink was gone. Flinching irritably, she lowered her hand back down and closed her eyes. She concentrated on calming herself; only then can she recall what had happened earlier and finally answer her question as to why she was lying all alone in the darkness.
Snippets of scenes flashed in her mind, and she had to grab her head and curl to her stomach because of the pain that was engulfing her. Tears were willing to flow down her cheeks, and it took all of her will power not to pass out and succumb to unconsciousness again.
Fire. Explosion. Screams. Pain. Darkness.
“What happened?” she asked herself. “Why can’t I remember anything?” Fear suddenly overtook her heart, and before she could stop herself, Emma suddenly found her whole body shivering in loneliness and terror.

“Jesse?”
The young molecular looked up and waited for Shalimar to enter Emma’s room. He had been sitting there for almost two hours already; not really moving, but just staring at Emma’s things.
“Hey, do you need company?”
Jesse didn’t bother answering, but allowed the feral to sit beside him and hold his arm. “Jesse, please don’t do this to your self,” the feral whispered. “It’s been a week. You need to stop doing this.”
The molecular smiled weakly. “I miss her Shal,” he confessed, not daring to meet his best friend’s eyes. “I miss Emma and Adam. I miss them like hell. And I feel like hell. Not being able to save the two persons that I loved with all my life.”
“Jesse,” Shalimar crooned, wrapping a comforting arm around the molecular. “If there’s anyone who should blame himself for their deaths, it’s me. It’s my father’s fault that we ended up in Naxcon in the first place. Please Jess, don’t blame yourself.”
“I never told her how I feel.”
The feral grew silent for a while. She had sensed that Jesse was falling for the young psionic way back, even before Gabriel Ashlocke died. But she didn’t confront him with it, thinking that he would be able to tell Emma how he felt when the time was right.
Unfortunately fate didn’t give Jesse enough time to muster up enough courage to tell Emma how he felt about her. And now it was too late. Emma was dead. And Jesse’s heart was broken. And along with that, Shalimar’s heart broke as well.

Brennan stared at Lexa from a distance, not really planning on being friendly with her or anything. He couldn’t understand why they had to accept her in the team so fast. It had only been a week; none of them had coped up with Emma and Adam’s loss yet. And now they’re accepting new members? What foolishness.
Besides, Brennan didn’t believe that the brunette could ever replace Emma’s position in the team. She was their darling angel, the innocent little girl that he constantly needed to protect, not because she asked for protection, but because he felt the bond between them the moment they bumped into the club about two years back. There and then he knew he would always have to protect her, be there for her no matter what. She was his soul mate. They didn’t need to be lovers to establish the kind of relationship they had; romance only makes things messy and unpredictable. He loved Emma as he loved his life, and he felt angry with himself for letting her die just like that. He hated himself for not being able to protect his little sister, his soul mate, his best friend, when she needed him the most.
And he wasn’t the only one who’s suffering because of Emma’s death. He knew Shalimar cries late at night, when the feral thought that everyone else was asleep. She cries for the sister she longed to have, the sister she shared everything with, the sister she failed to protect from death.
And Jesse. Yeah, Brennan knew he had a thing for the young psionic. It was obvious in the way he looked at her when they were all huddled together in the recroom, the way he listened whenever she spoke. Brennan knew all of it, but didn’t bother helping the molecular out because he was acting like a big brother, protecting his little sister from all possible suitors. And now Jesse’s heart was breaking. The same way his heart was.
