Set early season two, Mutant X comes into the picture in the next chapter.

Chapter One

"Scared, are you?" Jane smirked at the group of men surrounding her. They had obviously thought that she would be an easy target. There she was, a woman all alone, in a bad neighbourhood. It had very easy for them to force her in to a dark alleyway, or so they thought. Their opinion of her had rapidly changed, from the very first shot they had fired at her.

As if bored of the whole matter, Jane closed her eyes. Before any of the men could even move, she had sent out a psionic wave knocking them all out. She gave a little smile as she bent down to rifle through their pockets and take away their guns. By their terrified looks on their faces, they were definitely not having sweet dreams.

After one last check through their pockets and checking the coast was clear, she started to make her way to her car. Not that she particularly worried about seeing her. For one thing it was of middle night and she wasn't memorable person by any means.

While she was a petite woman, her face was almost instantly forgettable. It was almost as if someone had created her face but had been too lazy to give her any distinguishable features. Her face simply seemed to disappear, in to the crowd.

There were times when she wished that she was prettier, to have men look at her face, rather than...well other areas. But these days, her plain face was an asset. And besides even if they did remember her, a little blast would take that memory away.

She sighed getting into her car. There was something truly unsatisfying about working risk free. There was no thrill to her work anymore, not like when she had first started. Now those were the days, she thought to herself, drumming her fingers on the steering wheel impatiently, waiting for the traffic lights to turn green.

The brunette sighed again. Of course what she missed most about those days, was George. He had taken care of her when nobody else had cared. In so many ways he was her Artful Dodger. If wasn't for George, she would have never started in this business. Well not so much a business, as it was stealing. But they had only ever stolen people who could afford it. And only as much as they needed to survive, at least that's how George had justified it.

A car horn beeped loudly behind her, breaking her out of her reminiscing. Jane rolled her eyes in irritation and drove on. She lived just outside the city in a very small apartment. It was more of large closet to be honest. But she was comfortable enough and most importantly, the landlady didn't ask any questions as long as you paid your rent on time.

She parked her car in the dingy underground car park, and trudged up the stairs wearily. The building was always eerily quiet at night, something that Jane had never quite gotten used to. It made her feel like somehow she was only person left alive, and that thought alone was enough to make her shiver.

She crept in as quietly as possible, trying not to disturb her neighbours. Mr Weathington, in particular, was a notoriously cranky light sleeper. Jane had been told off more than once for waking him up. It was not something she wanted to happen again. Cautiously she went past his door, not even daring to breathe until she was well clear.

With a sigh of relief, she finally reached her apartment door and began fumbling for her keys in her purse. She counted the seconds in her head, timing how quickly she could find them. 3 seconds, not bad she thought as she unlocked the door and let herself. It was game she had started long ago with George, he was still ahead with 1 second even in complete darkness. I'll beat you one day, George, she smiled to herself.

Closing the door as quietly as possible, Jane could finally relax. She dumped the goods unceremoniously on the floor and turned on her bedside lamp. As complete dump met her eyes, Jane averted her brown eyes toward the ceiling. She kept putting off cleaning the apartment and this was the result. Tomorrow, she promised herself, yawning and finally collapsing on to her bed.
