Believe that anything goes in writing science fiction or fantasy?
Well, it doesn't.
This is not my concept; it is in truth a bedrock element in the writing of GOOD science fiction and fantasy. I've gone many rounds with people who are convinced they can make it up as they go along without any negative effect upon the calibre of their writing.
If you care about the quality of your sf/fantasy stories, if you care to continously improve [& all writers can stand to do that], you have to move past 'anything goes'. If you only want to churn out problem-ridden junk, you can stop reading here, and go back to churning out problem-ridden junk. If you DO care, an attentive reading of the following essay [from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America site--people who make $$$ doing this stuff] will reap rewards. Highly, highly recommended.

Never heard of Poul Anderson? He died in 2001, but obscure he was not. Here is a bibliography of his works. Anyone who was this successful for this long in both science fiction and fantasy knew what he was doing, and his advice and direction in writing is probably well worth your time and trouble to digest.
