| If you were in charge of writing for Mutant x Episodes what would you have done differently then how it had been showed...or if you wanted to explore more on anything in the episodes shown what would you have explored and why |

I really would have loved to see more of their pasts explored. I think that it would add a lot of depth to the characters.
I also would have tried to make all of the shows tie in better with each other. Sometimes you'd see something in one show and then later during another show it would never have happened. I know that the end of season3 really did a good job of keeping this going, but i would have liked to see that consistency through out the entire series.
i could probably think of more things later, but right now it is late and my brand new copy of 'dirty love' is calling me to watch it, lol
love you all

The first thing I would have done is make is open a middle school science textbook and make sure I knew what a mutant is [it is NOT a child or adult given some sort of treatment, despite the repetition of that gross misconception over 3 seasons] & make sure anyone else writing knew it, too.
This is not advanced science. This is 50+ year old science, and it is taught in basic classes, and anyone anywhere who takes a first science or biology course is taught this.
YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE HERITABLE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EXISTING ORGANISM.
No, not even if Adam says so. |

Look dear, I'm not going to be rude, heaven knows i dont want to get kicked off the board, but i want to say one little thing cause my best friend stood up for me once.
Mutant X is of a genre called 'Science-Fiction' That means fake science.
I think we are all pretty aware of the fact that there are a few scientific discrepancies in the show, but we all loved the show and that is what is important. it was a show to give us entertainment andnot a science lesson.
Shalimar, psigen: please don't kill me for posting this, i promise that i'm not too into doing this, but the message upset me!
Love

I've been reading science fiction for several decades. I know what it is and what it is not. It is most emphatically NOT about "fake science". It is about the effect of technology (real or imagined) upon characters, usually human or with recognizably human emotions and motivations. A writer can EXTRAPOLATE from real science, and imagine a world in which it is possible to go into an egg cell, and add a very specific chain of nucleotides to a DNA molecule --part of a chromosome-- but they cannot throw BASIC science out the window, the kind of thing that every scientifically literate person knows, and pretend that acquired characteristics are passed on to the next generation. [If they were, people who say, lost an arm, would then all have children with only one arm, correct? Except they don't.]
If they do, they're just sloppy, or worse, they assume the audience is ignorant.
"A few scientific discrepancies"? Uh, no. Very many. Add to that crazy misconceptions about how corporations do science, and before long, anyone who knows about either has to question who's really the hero, since the supposed hero has to be a mega-liar, but that is another story.
The people who made this series were sloppy, sloppy, sloppy, in continuity and in failing to do some rudimentary fact-checking. Some of the things they presented as real are just plain horrifying. Does anyone here really believe that there are mental institutions that routinely beat children, for example???
Accept the fact that in very many ways, MX was a botched, sloppy job, and could have been a vastly better series if someone had spent 5 minutes and reviewed basic science. Just because you like a series, and I must like it because I am operating and paying for 2 websites about it, doesn't mean you have to accept its deepest flaws as unimportant.
Note that I have not inserted any suggestion of personal attack here. |

A lost arm does not trigger any genetic mutations.

Yes. In Romania they do. And not necessarily mental institutions. Just plain orphanages too. |

Exactly. Neither does a chemical treatment in childhood or adulthood. That is my point.

Not in the US or Canada. This will never happen to children. It will not happen to adults, either, as part of an treatment. Shalimar's beatings would never happen. |

And exactly how is it not fun to go along with the basis of this thread--to improve upon what what presented in the series?
One of the primary things a writer must never do is have elements in a story that jar the reader/viewer out of the story, thinking, "This is garbage! I learned when I was 14 that a mutation has to occur at the single-cell or handful of cells stage for it to be heritable! And what is this hogwash about Adam not knowing what was going on? Nobody pays PhDs the kind of money Adam would be getting, and then shoves them into a corner without telling what they are working on!"
If you derail your audience, you've diminished your story.
Fun? Getting it right is fun. Making it BETTER is fun! |

Even the opening credits of Mutant X shows a single cell being manipulated! Somebody knew what creating mutants with heritable characteristics involved!
So, why is the wish that things had not been done so messily and ineptly possibly considered the kind of post worthy of being deleted, anyway? Why does this disturb anyone? |

Both state a valid point. BUT it does stray off the topic
This topic is how you would write the episodes of Mutant X based upon the current basis ie: what you'd expand on about the characters, about the state of the world - and it is science fiction - DM, I'd love to introduce you to a TARDIS and all the quantum space/time gobblegook that accompanys it - some of which are substantiated, other bits are just so far out there... but hey, poetic licence comes as part of the job of a science fiction writer.
You've all had you say, all points are well taken - lets get back to the topic at hand please.
Thanks, folks! |

Uh, I was talking about Mutant X. I think you are limiting the discussion by decree to keep any innovative thought about the underpinnings of the series--which in turn affects the rest of the show--because some people do not want to bother thinking it all through.
Somehow, I have managed to write 300,000 words fixing the underpinnings, and not once did I cry because thinking about it made my brain hurt.
Actually, it was a lot of fun, and a helluva lot more creative than doing minor character tweaks. |
