My three special ladies: my two grandmothers and my paternal grandmother's youngest sister (that was more a grandmother than an aunt to me).

Gramma Viola died in 1994. Her birthday is the end of December. It's been 10 years, but sometimes it feels like yesterday. I grew up with Gramma living about 6 miles away, so we spent a lot of time together. My mother moved in with her after my mom left my dad, so I spent even more time there. I remember the year I had mono. My Gramma fed me a lot of chicken soup and tea and we'd had long talks (when my throat wasn't hurting). We talked about all the trips "up the countryside" to visit her brothers on their farms. Her funeral was beautiful (as much as those moments can be). My mom, 2 uncles and their wives rode in the limosine. I followed immediately after. We took her home to the family plot and went over Peter's Mountain for the last time with her. I don't live in that state anymore, so I don't get to visit her grave site any more. I miss her so much....

Grandmother Lela died about 7 years ago on Jan 2. I didn't get to go to her funeral because I was terribly sick that week and couldn't handle a 5 hour drive to her home town. I did finally get to see her gravesite about 3 years ago. Our last visit together was difficult because of her mental dementia, she only knew the 10 year old girl who visited her for the first time then, not the adult female I had become. I miss her becasue I've had so many questions about her life and family since I grew up in another state and didn't have much contact with her. I still have a quilt that she made for me on my bed. It is threadbare and worn out in a few places but I still won't part from it because she made it for me.

Aunt Rose was Grandmother Lela's younger sister. She died a year and a half ago. I was sore at first at my cousins because even though we've been in contact by email and everything, I wasn't notified of her death until 3 weeks later. I bawled my eyes out for two days. She was my "grandmother" more so than Lela since Lela's mind had left her when I was about 13 years old. We had talked on the phone a lot and exchanged letters and cards. I had just talked to Aunt Rose about a week before she took ill. She died about 3 weeks later. I finally took the drive to her gravesite (about 3 1/2 hours) and planted bulbs and flowers there. I will always remember the hillside and the sunset that was spreading out that day. Aunt Rose, this one is for you.
