Just what motivated this psycho? Revenge? Bad Spelling? The need to be loved?
Let us know your thoughts on him today.
Personally I think he was just an Eckhart wannabe with more power then he could use. Or not.
Just what was the enigma that was Gabriel Ashlocke? |

Bad spelling? hehe
Hmmm...well, I think they just brought Ashlocke in as some sort of hearthrob or something since Easton was a soap opera actor. He was kind of doing what he did in soaps: bedhopping.
Ashlocke could have had a purpose. He was supposed to be Adam's guilt where mutants were concerned. But somehow that didn't pan out. I think he could have been a worthy opponent if the writers had stuck more to telling a story than seeing Ashlocke's sex antics.
As for Eckhart, I'm convinced it was The Creator the writers made a very bad attempt at trying to resurrect Eckhart... hehe

I think Ashloke wanted to be accepted for who he was, and he wanted to be loved (thus the sex antics and the mind controlled links). Only somewhere along the way he lost it (his sanity i mean). I mean he tried to force everyone into liking him, because it was the only kinda love he knew.
Sorry if this post doesn't make sense but after ten hours of school nothing does. |

I think Gabriel resented Adam -first for making him a mutant- and later for him having to owe his amazing powers to Adam. (Without them, he would have been an average guy really) I think he also wanted to get even with the world for what he felt had been done to him, and thats what really motivted him.Getting what he could out of his powers, which included getting shalimar,
Its not that ashlocke wasn't good. Its just that Eckhart was always more subtly evil and his sense of humour was more interesting. He'll always be better than Gabriel. |

Interesting. Given Gabriel's underlying personality defects, I think he would have become a psychopath even had he not been a new mutant. His abilities just turned up his destructive potential a notch or ten. |

In essence Gabriel was the spoilt brat who never grew up. Nobody ever said no to him (mainly cos he'd kill em if they did) and when you live like that... well no wonder. At least we can't blame the parents......
But I also think he only wanted to be loved. He wanted to be loved all the time, by everyone - and got too paranoid when things like morals and right and wrong came into play. He needed to know EVERYthing about EVERYone every second of the day. Well he certainly went to pieces in the end.... sorry sorry my bad pun. LOL |

Gabriel Ashlocke, from beginning to end, made very little sense; mostly he was about very bad, very hurried writing with a minimum of mental reflection.
He was supposed to be a stopgap villain. Trouble was, he was constructed with insufficient thought, leaving him without weaknesses, and in such fashion to leave him an unsympathetic character. He's really VERY boring.
Now, we're supposed to believe that he has spent most of his life in stasis. Guess what? No nourishment, no growth! He should have stayed a child physically! Further, he should not have grown emotionally and he should have had no more than a kid's knowledge of the world. A nasty, rotten child would have been more interesting.
Lousy writing, and it is stunning that so little has been made of the incredible lapse of logic.
What motivated Ashlocke? Bad writing. Really. Garbage in, garbage out. Finally, not knowing what to do with him, he just sort of...went away.
So far as Adam making him a mutant, that's impossible. Adam didn't show up until Ashlocke was 10. YOU CANNOT MAKE A MUTANT OF A 10 YEAR OLD. BASIC SCIENCE, EXTREMELY BASIC. IF YOU DON'T REMEMBER THIS, LOOK IT UP. EVEN THE SERIES OPENING SHOWS A SINGLE CELL BEING MANIPULATED.
And please, don't tell me this is science fiction and anything goes because if you have actually looked into the writing of science fiction, you'll know that just is not the case. SF stories have internal rules and structure--if they did not, they would be as disordered and chaotic as most dreams. |

Eye candy for somebody. Not for me, and from past discussion, I know I'm not unique.
I've seen the actor in one other role. Same character, different name. Yawn.
Ashlocke's S2 presence was just the beginning of the Mohanization Plague that descended on the series, from which it never recovered. |

Well he had a little piece of good in him....maybe..But he had an obsession with Shalimar!
Shalimar is very sexy so what guy wouldn't be obsessed with her? |

In my opinion, Ashlocke was designed to represent the antithesis to Eckhart. In the first season, the creators emphasized the evil of humanity (Eckhart, the GSA) portraying the New Mutants as victims of Eckhart's cruelty. However, Ashlocke is not only a New Mutant - but the most powerful, and the first - and he was evil. I suppose that Ashlocke was brought in to represent the truly megalomaniacal and ruthless side of the New Mutants. He also differed from Eckhart and the GSA in the sense that Eckhart represented order and control. His entire purpose was to reel the Mutants in and use them for his own (and the government's) purpose.
Ashlocke 'pretends' to be about order and peace, but he's not. He represents this true evil, unhindered by moral restraints. In many ways, he is the chaotic side of evil, where Eckhart represented the more lawful side. |

Good points. But I think we have to put Adam into the mix alittle bit as well. We know that Adam and Mason were still colleagues when Gabriel was podded - but that Gabriel actually blames Adam for 'betraying' him - so it could be fair to theorise that Adam somehow gained Gabriels trust, before possibly tricking him into the pod.
We know from Time Squared, that Gabriel was born without a conscience in the first place, making him an unpredictable and even violent child - more than likely he would've grown into the same type of man he became anyway, but the powers - especially the psionic abilities, have to have played a part in upping his pychosis. After all if you're locked up for fifteen plus years, following betrayal - you're bound to come out wanting revenge.
Was Gabriel truly evil? We'll never know. Because we can't predict what kind of man he might've become had he not been given those powers, and not been shut up all those years.
An a*****e, yeah - I'll give you that. But would he have been a murderer, wanting revenge, and out to destroy entire populations simply to rule the world? We can't say for sure, so in a way you have to feel a little pity for Gabriel in that respect. He didnt have his future stolen from him, but he certainly did have the ability to make decisions about his future taken away or curtailed.
And I think that is Mason's and Adam's fault. |
