Mystery of the Shattered Lantern
After a complicated mission to retrieve an important artifact in the strange forests of Kalayaan Islands (Freedom Island), the MX team went missing, leaving Adam with no choice but to form a temporary team from the underground to search for them. The new team is assigned the task to locate the original team and the artifact. Sounds simple enough, but as soon as the newly established group lands in the mysterious island, they discover that there is something more than what meets the eye, a nameless and faceless form of evil that they have never encountered before. Now they must race against time to save the original MX team and themselves, before the darkness completely swallows them whole.

“Adam, we found the artifact,” came Jesse’s hazy voice over the commlink. “We’re on our way back up now.”
“Okay, tell me as soon as you get back safely in the Helix,” the scientist answered back as he typed some data into the main computer.
“Will do,” the molecular started to reply when a familiar shout resounded in the background.
“What’s going on?” Adam asked, suddenly standing up and gripping the edge of the computer console. “Was that Shalimar? Jesse? Answer me!”
“Emma!” Adam heard the indistinct voice of Brennan calling the psionic’s name as he frantically tried to get someone from the team talk.
“Jesse? Lexa? What’s going on over there?”
“We need backup!” came Jesse’s ragged voice over the commlink. “Something’s after us, it already got Shal and Lexa. I repeat, we need back -- ”
A series of more indistinct screaming from the team, and then complete silence. |

Adam Kane waited for the team to assemble, worry gnawing at the pit of his stomach. He hadnt eaten properly in days, and stubble was evident on his chin where he'd neglected to shave that morning. All he could think about was Jesse's last garbled message and the screams that had followed. He'd given up on sleeping, the nightmare of not knowing, but imagining had proved too much.
He hoped this new group of New Mutants could help him find what he had lost. And he wasnt referring to that damn artifact either.
Picking up his coffee cup, he drained the last remnants of its cold contents and grimaced.
It had only been an hour since he'd put out the call, a call he'd hoped he'd never have to make - but these guys were good, not AS good as his team, but good enough in their own right to be called in. Because now the mission to get the artifact was over. Now the mission to get Mutant X out alive had begun.
He checked his watch again. Where were they? |

Sam shut down her laptop and stood up from her chair. She just received a call from Adam Kane about an urgent meeting, and frankly she’s still deciding if she should attend or not. She still has a huge pile of homework due at the end of the week, plus her editor-in-chief assigned her a new features article for their latest issue of the magazine. But then again she owed Adam big time for helping her cope with her growing powers, and for introducing her to wonderful people she now considered friends. Sighing, she grabbed her sling bag and headed out of her room, finally determined to attend the meeting.

Cyan sighed in relief as the last student left her office. Finally, she finished her hours for the week in the guidance office. Being a part-time counselor sometimes gets to her, especially since she can read most of the emotions that her patients are feeling. Checking her phone she retrieved a voice mail from Adam Kane. An urgent meeting is to take place that day. Cyan grinned and immediately began fixing her stuff so she could go to the appointed place. She loved going to routine assignments for the underground, and she hoped Adam has something cool for them this time around. |

Telsia was shocked to find a message on her computer saying Adam wanted to see her. Why would Adam Kane want to see her? She was just a safe house watcher that had no activity for weeks at a time. Sure alone time but she got really bored some days.
Faith listened to her phone message and blinked in surprise. She had no heard from Adam in over a year. What could he possibly want from her? She was not useful in missions really well okay she was but she didnt feel like she could do much. Partially cause she thought her blindness was the cause but then again she could see just a well as the others minus the part where she couldnt see color. |

Kaelyn closed her cell phone. She hadn’t expected to hear from Adam Kane, not after all these years. She had been almost tempted to hang up on him, but before she could, he told her his Mutant X team had gone missing, she knew she couldn't let them down. She owed the Mutant X team too much; they had quite literally saved her life. It was now her time to repay the favor.
She put her cell phone in her pocket and reached for her black leather jacket. She could be at Sanctuary in an hour if she took her motorcycle, college would have to wait, and she had friends to save. She only hoped she could.
She would ask Adam for more information when she saw him. He sounded so mysterious over the phone.
She put the jacket on and headed for the door. |

| Cyan was the first to arrive in the meeting place. She saw Adam and immediately headed towards him. “Hey,” she greeted, noting the fact that the scientist lacked sleep. “What’s up? Who else is coming?” Being a telempath she could easily read the emotions that Adam was unconsciously sending out. She just didn’t know why he was so anxious. She thought it would be just another routine mission; Adam had failed to inform her about the agenda of the meeting. Something told her she won’t be working on some underground gathering this time around. |

Kaelyn drove her motorcycle into the underground cave under Sanctuary. She got off her bike and walked to the elevator, pressing in her security code from years ago. To her surprised it still worked. As she walked she thought back to her last time with Adam. She had been so angry with him for sending her away, she had wanted to be a member of Mutant X, and he said no. Wasn’t it funny how after all this time he needed her to save them?
She wasn’t angry with Mutant X, they were her friends, and they had saved her from Ashlocke years ago. She walked out of the elevator and headed down the hallway toward the situation room. She was amazed at how much the place hadn’t changed. “Never thought I would be here at Sanctuary again. Welcome home Kae.” |

| Sam arrived at Sanctuary and hurried for the common room. She knew she was late by a few minutes, but being a precog she knew that most of the other people would be late as well. Still she hated to see Adam’s face when she arrives an hour late for the meeting, so she tried her best to get there on time. She skidded to a corner and slammed against another girl. She toppled down the floor, and rubbing her forehead she stared at the other person. She looked familiar, and her eyes grew in surprise when she recalled who the other girl was. “Kaelyn?” She didn’t know her very well, just met her once or twice over the past, oh, four years? What was she doing there? Was she called to the meeting as well? |

Kaelyn was so busy reminiscing that she wasn’t paying attention to where she was going. All of a sudden, she collided with what felt like a wall and fell to the floor. She sat up and looked; lying on the floor in front of her was another girl. The girl sat up and Kaelyn saw her face, “Sam?”
‘What is she doing here, she isn’t a member of Mutant X. Adam would have told me, wouldn’t he? Wait if he called Sam, and me, how many others did he call? How much danger is Mutant X in?’ |

| “Hey,” Sam greeted, standing up and offering Kaelyn her hand. “Haven’t seen you in a while. Adam called you as well?” If Adam took the time to call someone like Kaelyn (who hasn’t particularly kept contact with him over the years), then the agenda for the meeting must be something of grave seriousness. She decided to ask questions later and kept quiet, suddenly not knowing what to say to the other girl. |

Kaelyn took Sam’s hand, from what she could remember of Sam, she knew she could be trusted. She knew Sam briefly, after she left the Links, though she wasn’t sure if Sam knew the whole truth.
Kaelyn knew Sam was precog, but other than that, nothing. “Yea, Adam called me; see he called you as well. Guess we better find Adam and find out what’s going on.” |

| “Yeah,” Sam replied, smiling. When she took Kaelyn’s hand she knew there was a possibility that she would read into her future possibilities, but it was a good thing she didn’t. Meaning nothing out of the extraordinary was about to happen in the near future. “I think he should be in the common room by now. I’m not sure how many people he invited for the meeting, but I’m guessing there should be at least five of us.” She started for the common room, walking side by side with the elemental. |

Briony rarely checked her phone messages. Usually there was none as she didn't have many friends. She ignored the blinking light when she came back in from the nursery fields that she owned, figuring it was another telemarketer. She kept two land lines for that reason. If they needed something from the nursery, there was always the store number.
Washing up, she punched the play button. She was quite surprised to hear Adam Kane's voice. This was new. She feed her menagerie of animals, all in various states of healing and called the shop to leave a message with her manager there, about being gone for a few hours. She dug out her cell phone from the drawer where she kept it 99% of the time and made sure it was charged up. Then she walked to the location she remembered visiting as a scared teenager awhile back. She remembered the code Adam gave her and she punched it in before entering. After shutting the door, she mentally searched quietly for awake minds in Sanctuary. Adam's was easily recognized, but the other females were not. "Sorry, Adam. I'm here now," she sent him, gently, remembering he wasn't a psionic. She headed for the group. |

| Luke walked out and down the steps of the private jet that had taken him and a few friends off to the Bahamas for a month of fun, sun and lots of drinks. He had no reception on his cell phone since he had left and he couldn’t use it in the plane, you know those darn air traffic rules. Once he stepped off the plane, his cell phone went off with a rainbow of rings and flashings. He had about 120 waiting messages. And a ton of text messages. He was sure he had tons of emails and blogposts online as well. He scrolled down the waiting message list..."girl, girl, girl, have no clue, girl girl, Amanda oooo must call her back, girl girl, home boy Jack, not in the mood for his crap, girl, Adam girl girl girl wait what? Adam? What’s this about?” He clicked the message and listened. It had been a long time since he had heard anything about Mutant X. He had taken to his new life and identity, the one Adam provided and had left the streets and the thieving business, after a long lecture by Brennan about it. He now had a new life and new friends. Pretty well off friends too. He liked his life. Parties. The occasional girlfriend though about a thousand girls called him a day. A few drinks with the buddies. A nice job. Nice apartment. He was living good. Now a call from Adam Kane. What could that mean other than trouble. He listened to the message and the meeting instructions. Looking at his watch he looked at the date and time. "Oh rats that’s now." He looked over his shoulder at the guys and yelled to let them know he was out. To leave his stuff at Dave's house. That he would be back for it. He took off running to the entrance of the airport so he could hail a cab to take him to the closest safehouse. He needed something nicer than a cab to go all the way to Sanctuary. He had been there once as a hopeful recruit but didn’t accept the job. Much like Emma but he actually didn't take the gig. He might have been lucky that way. He loved his new life. The cab stopped at the designated spot and 10 minutes later, after getting some stuff ready and grabbing a leather trench coat and a helmet, he blazed down the street in a red Honda CBR 600, his coat flying around in the wind behind him. It was going to take him a bit but he would make it. He had to stop at a red light and that gave him time to make a call. "Come on Adam pick up." |

| Kaelyn stood in the common room talking and waiting for Adam. They had assumed wrongly that he would be in there waiting for them. Both girls heard someone coming and turned hoping to see Adam, but they saw another girl coming toward them. Kaelyn spoke first, “Hey, so Adam called you too? I’m Kaelyn and this is Sam, who are you?” |
