Today Forbes Magazine www.forbes.com announced the list of the 400 wealthiest Americans. It's an interesting reading. As the analysis goes, the treshold for getting listed rose by 150millionUS$ this year, which means that everyone there is worth at least 900millionUS$ net. Together, they are worth over US$ 1 Trillion. The news has been wired a lot and it's the only thing you'll probably find on Google News on the subject.
However, looking at pictures of hurricanes and taking a peak at their social effects, I wanted to see how the poorest of Americans fare.
Quote: About 12.4 percent of all Americans - almost 35 million people - live under the federal poverty rate, which was up from 11.7 percent in 2001. http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/03/09/26_poor.html
It's not the best prospect. And what about households?
Quote: The official poor: 13.5 million families or households making between zero and $18,000 a year http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=DVXA,DVXA:2005-19,DVXA:en&q=The+400000+poorest+Americans+are+worth
If we take an average of $10,000 per household this makes just 135Billion $, well below $1 Trillion above.
I won't take sides...
I couldn't help notice, however that The Ape Trial is coming back, in an effort to decide how evolution should be taught in US schools http://news.ft.com/cms/s/56fb2746-2bcf-11da-995a-00000e2511c8.html. It has been judged before, but it'll be interesting to see how the modern justice system, with all its intricacies will pass this one this time?
What do you think? |
