Mason is no idiot. The writers in S3 just dumbsized him. Eckhart is the type who knows any building he's in from top to bottom, like Genomex. He wasn't the security guy at GX (when he started long before Breedlove's death) for nothing. Surely, he must have known the layout of the GSA hideout he was in. He should have actually exited the same way Brennan was brought in.

Was Mohan responsible for 'Lest He Become' in season two? Because, in some aspects, I consider that to be one of Eckhart's finest episodes. It shows how manipulating and calculating he truly is - and for the first time ever, he manages to outwit Adam (considering his own high intellect and skills in security and manipulation; he should've been able to one up Adam on more than one occasion - but alas, the writers didn't allow him to), by disabling Adam's EMP when he entered the building. And then, best of all, he escapes (after managing to capture two Mutant X members).
As for 'Into The Moonless Night', I believe that the threat that Eckhart presented to Mutant X (and indeed, to 'the whole world', as Brennan so lovingly declared) was done very well, by the fact that he continues to outwit Mutant X (as well as succeeding to take something from them by force), and capturing Brennan once again. Even The Dominion (Mohan's 'genetic/scientific' Illuminati) even recognizes Eckhart and his plans as a serious threat to their mission. Regarding Eckhart's death, I believe that it could've been more. Am I completely appalled by Brennan's lack of morals when he not only ruthlessly murdered Eckhart, but also killed a parapalegic-psychic? Of course! Which is why it made the episode so good. Brennan finally gave into his dark side (He went 'Vader' for a moment,  ). However, it fell short when this deed was not addressed, and how it was simply ignored. Mutant X are supposed to be the heroes; and I think that the writers finally understood that it is both pointless and detrimental to the overall plot to make their heroes perfect. I just wish they had addressed the issue of Brennan's cruelty a bit more.
But the BIGGEST crime of that episode was when Eckhart mused that Sanctuary's location was a place that meant a lot to both him and Adam, hinting at their friendship - and then not elaborating on it. Ever. That was a grave error.
And 'Cirque des Merveilles' was absolutely brilliant - in my opinion. As an Eckhart fan, I looked forward to episodes featuring him. |

Why would Eckhart create more mutants in the first place when in the Cirque ep he's rambling on about exterminating the entire mutant race?

Same reason he didnt stop Adam from finding a cure for New Mutants in 'The Meaning of Death' episode.
I think he's conflicted.
On the one side he's got his mission : protect mankind from Adam and his mutants, but on the other side he's got the power ego. If New Mutants disappeared overnight, what would Mason have left emotionally and physically. His power over the GSA stems from the fact he's needed to serve and protect everyone else from these anomalies.
Take that away, and what's left?
Also his need for revenge against Adam - that surpasses the New Mutant thing. We all know he blames Adam for Incident X, but just why? We're not told, but we all have our theories.
The trouble with Mason is not uncommon. If you were given your heart's desire what would you do then? Take up Scrabble and Gardening? We think not. |

Well, I'll ask you to recall a specific quote from CDM. Eckhart states in that video that he set this plan in motion only if "he was not around to control them himself." Those are his own words. Basically, if Eckhart can't govern the New Mutants and make them his personal slaves/henchmen, then he wants them gone. |

This is also true. In 'the Meaning of Death' Eckhart makes it very clear that he does not really care about the New Mutants. Considering how he was first unwilling to help made it clear that even those working for him were fair game as far as the virus was concerned. However, Adam made it clear that if they died, the GSA would cease to operate, and that Eckhart would lose his bete noir - his reason for 'living'. According to Adam, Eckhart's life is defined by that which he hates the most.
As far as the cure was concerned, Eckhart always planned to take it away from Adam - since half of Adam's team was down and he was working in a Genomex medical facility surrounded at all times by Marlowe and Eckhart's men. Eckhart was then going to kill Adam.
Eckhart's motives for New Mutants are like this: They can exist, so long as he can control them. If not, then he will do his best to dispose of them by any means - whether it be stasis or murder. Which is what CDM was all about. His final contingency plan set in motion upon his death. But before that, Eckhart simply wanted New Mutants to be under his control. |
