On April 26 1986 we had a glimpse of what our world would be like if we put nuclear energy to wrong (perhaps any) use. Thousands have died and thousand morre have suffered the consequences of birocratic idocity. The authorities first tried to cover up the accident from the rest of world, and even from the people of Ukraine. Two days after the accident the town closest to the Chernobyl powerplant, Pripyat, were evacuated "to return after a few days". They never have returned, although the other 3 reactors of the plant have continued to work untill december 2000. The containment of the accident was also done poorly. Soldiers had to pick up reactive fuel with their bare hands from the land surrownding Chernobyl. Many died that way. Some still live in the iradiated area, and tehy are healthy despide the poisoned air, earth and water.
The abandoned town of Pripyat still stands as a dead yet moving remider of those days. Some artist visited the town and painted grafitty n the barren walls. To see their work click here.
